Pictures of Bodiam Castle

In Roman times, Bodiam was a main crossing point for the road leading from Beauport near Battle to the North Kent coast. It was also used as a port from which to ship the Iron Ingots produced in nearby Sedlescombe, Staplecross and Stonegate .

One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in
1385, as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the
top of the towers
.

Bodiams main claim to fame is its great medieval military fortress, the last to have been built in England. This moated fairytale castle was built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge between 1385 and 1390 as a protection to the Rother valley from the French.

Set in open parkland, the castle is approached through a series of medieval features. The Castle itself, set in a picturesque spring fed moat, appears to be almost complete from the outside. Once entered across the modern bridge, the extent of the damage incurred during the 17th century becomes evident. However it is easy to imagine how this once grand home would have been set out. An investigation of the towers will give access to the roof and the wonderful views of the Rother Valley.
